CFD simulations for process industrial applications can be used to evaluate equipment design, process development and optimisation, diagnostic and troubleshooting, retrofit evaluation and what-if scenarios involving fluid flows. Examples include designs of pumps, heat exchangers, flow distributors, inlets and outlets strategy and mixing equipments.
CFD technology has paved the way to look at the current industrial process practise in a more detailed and visual way and thus results in improved understanding and hence help accomplish more efficient and effective process design and equipments.
A heat exchanger is a piece of equipment built for efficient heat transfer from one medium to another. The media may be separated by a solid wall to prevent mixing or they may be in direct contact. Analysis on industrial heat exchanger can show the heat transfer process from hot fluid to the cold one giving the opportunity to improve the process. Improvement can be done by changing the pipe dimension and material thickness, flow path and direction.
In chemical engineering, chemical reactors are vessels designed to contain chemical reactions. Chemical engineers design reactors to maximize net present value for the given reaction. Designers ensure that the reaction proceeds with the highest efficiency towards the desired output product. CFD can be used to investigate a mixing process in the reactor and to make sure uniform mixing process occurs in all of the reactor area. Improvement of mixing process can be done by optimizing the shape and size of the impeller and the speed of the impeller rotation.
Cyclonic separation is a method of removing particulates from an air, gas or liquid stream, without the use of filters, through vortex separation. Rotational effects and gravity are used to separate mixtures of solids and fluids. CFD analysis is often used to optimize the separation process.
Burner is a mechanical device that burns a gas or liquid fuel into a flame in a controlled manner and it is commonly used in industry. CFD can help to optimize burning process inside the device with complete combustion good heat transfer process to the heating fluid.
